Spotlight: Patrick and Rozana from Through the Porthole

What's the coolest thing about junkin' besides scooping up a dusty treasure?
The people you meet.
I've had some of the best conversations standing in farm fields in 100-degree Texas heat sifting through racks and rows of metal tubs.
The vendors that show up to many of these antique shows create pretty awesome displays and definitely have a knack for uncovering gems that many have left behind.
On the SheBloom blog, I'm going behind the scenes to spotlight creatives that drive this junkin' industry.
These people are on the road not taken and make an interesting business out of traveling the country and world in search of one-of-a-kind vintage finds.
Meet Patrick and Rozana from San Pedro, CA.

These two own Through the Porthole and you can expect to find the coolest pieces in their booth.
They've even caught the eye of The Fixer Upper's Joanna Gaines.
Rozana was recently featured on the show after Joanna bought an aqua Cafe sign from the couple.
Here it is hanging in the new Magnolia Table restaurant.
It's the coolest.

The Cafe sign Joanna bought from Through the Porthole. I snapped a pic at the restaurant.

I caught up with Patrick and Rozana while loading a container in Round Top, Texas and got a glimpse of what they love about this business.
Read below for some great details.

One of the creative displays you can expect from Through the Porthole

What's the name of your business and where can we follow you?
TTP: Through the Porthole. You can follow us on Instagram @throughtheporthole and our Website throughtheportholeshop.com

Why do you call yourselves Through the Porthole?
TTP: Because of where we live and both grew up in San Pedro. It's the port area of Los Angeles and we wanted a name that reflected where we came from.

Where do you love to go picking?
TTP: We've been picking all over California, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee. And probably there's more that I'm forgetting. But we tend to stay in the southern states because we have really good friends who live in Arkansas and we love to go and visit.

Where did your love for the business start?
TTP: We started picking when we bought our first apartment. We kinda caught the bug from there. We fell in love with the Junk World and the rest is history!

What are some of your favorite finds?
TTP: We love anything with drawers. Apothecary cabinets, general store organizers. Anytime we find a cabinet like that we get really excited.

Would you get a look at some of these pieces? A crafters dream storage right there!

Describe one of the most unexpected places you found a treasure.
TTP: We once picked some great butcher block tables and bakers racks from an old local bakery. The funny part was we were on our way home (walking) from a family graduation when we stumbled upon the bakery. We had to wheel the pieces down the street in our dress clothes. I just remember clouds of flour puffing up and all over us every time we hit a bump. Anything for junk I suppose!

Pickin' is hard work. What keeps you inspired?
TTP: Pickin' is definitely hard work but we love it! We are constantly wanting to create better displays and find better, cooler stuff. We are definitely inspired by our colleagues and fellow junkers as well. It's definitely something that keeps us going!

What do you love most about your job?
TTP: We love being able to create our own schedule and turn a vacation into a pickin' trip. Plus, we feel so lucky to do what we love for a living. It doesn't feel like work half the time.

Through the Porthole is going to be at the Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market in Scottsdale, Arizona on April 27-29. Stop by and say hi!!

If you're lucky you may walk away with this  green farm table. This beauty is amongst the treasures Through the Porthole is bringing to the show.
